Steve McCurry’s travel photography tips

This video on travel photography tips come straight from the source. Master photographer Steve McCurry sums up some of the most important but basic compositional rules used by a great travel photographer. The ability to see the potential for a strong picture and then organize the graphic elements into an effective, compelling composition has always been a characteristic of a great travel photographer.

I cannot think of a better person to give out travel photography tips. Steve has been in business since the early 70’s, and as you may know, he is best known for his photograph on the Afgan Girl who appeared in National Geographic magazine in 1983. Steve has earned many awards including first-place prizes in the World Press Photo contest in 1985 and 1992.

The video goes over nine basic rules such as:

Rule of thirds
Leading Lines
Diagonal lines
Framing techniques
Figure to ground
How to fill the frame.
Center dominant eye
Patterns and repetition (or interrupted patterns)
Symmetry

Towards the end of the video, Steve explains and encourage us to break the rules. I would personally suggest breaking the rules once you master all these travel photography tips.

If you wanted to expand the knowledge learned in this video I recommend reading The Photographer’s Eye by Michael Freeman. This book goes into more advanced subjects such as dynamic tension and other compositional techniques that extend to not just travel photography but every aspect of image making.

Many photographers widely use These travel photography tips on many diferent fileds. I use them on a regular basis for my architectural photography work. And they are especially useful for food and product photography as well.
