Architecture photography of the Abu Dhabi Mosque

I am not particularly known for architecture photography mostly because I market myself as a luxury hotel photographer . What I do is take every bit of free time and dedicate it to architecture photography of any city I am visiting.

In case you are wondering… Yes, this is the same mosque that Rihanna and Selena Gomez got in trouble. Rihanna for taking a selfie with the mosque on the background and Selena for doing the same, but showing were ankle while doing so. This is the Abu Dhabi Mosque, a mosque that was built between 1996 and 2007 by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan who wanted to establish a structure which unites the cultural diversity of Islamic world, the historical and modern values of architecture and art.

I had the pleasure of working in Abu Dhabi last year as I was photographing The Sofitel Hotel. Visiting the Abu Dhabi Mosque was at the top of my to do list. This place has some interesting features: Did you know that:

The carpet in the main prayer hall is considered to be the world’s largest carpet made by Iran’s Carpet Company and designed by Iranian artist Ali Khaliqi. This carpet measures 60,570 sq ft, and was made by around 1,200-1,300 carpet knotters. The weight of this carpet is 35 ton and is predominantly made from wool. There are 2,268,000,000 knots within the carpet and it took approximately two years to complete.

As the country’s grand mosque, it is the key place of worship for Friday gathering and Eid prayers. During Eid it can be visited by more than 40,000 people. The main prayer hall can accommodate over 7,000 worshipers. Travel photographer Antonio Cuellar explains that there are two smaller prayer halls, with a 1,500-capacity each, one of which is the female prayer hall
