Many Factors contribute to inspiration when it comes to an architecture and interior photography shoot, and many of them came into play when I shot this sumer house in Florida near Miami. I new shooting this Architectural images was going to be a pleasure shortly after a breif conversation with the Architects in my New York office. This contemporary LEED Platinum home was designed by the Chicago firm of Searle Lamaster Howe Architects and built by Kimco Construction of Sarasota. The home features a 100% whole house cistern system, solar water heating, and photovoltaic electricity generation among other sustainable green features. The Architects have been awarded the “Top 100 Architects & Designers” by Architectural Digest, the “AIA Distinguished Building Award”, and the “National AIA Interior Architecture Award” among others. This home is not to be missed as a practical example of the synergy of aesthetic form and sustainable function. I was very rewarding to know that my Florida architectural Photographer skills played a role in the process of LEED award selection for this florida home.

As one of the top Architecture and interior design photographers in the United states I have opportunity to shoot some of the new development in the entire East Cost, from New York down to Miami Florida. I often get the opportunity to photograph developments such as Hotels, resorts, Hospital, restaurants and without a doubt I am beginning to notice a growing number of eco-friendly features .
Hampton Inn & Suites in Miami Florida is the city’s first LEED certified hotel. Since I was hired back in October to photograph the architecture and Interior design of this building, the development has been accredited with a number of green certifications. The facility features environmental friendly initiatives such as charging stations for electric cars, rainwater harvesting, in-room energy management systems, ozone laundry, low-flow fixtures and more. Even the products used by the cleaning staff are non-toxic and environmentally safe. All of these features in addition to all the features of a top quality hotel. The photographs have also been submitted to numerous architecture and interior design magazines and many other Interior design contests and Architecture exhibits. Some of the Architectural photographs and Interior design Photographs can be seen In the Hotel Website and all over the internet. These are some of the green features of the hotel taken directly from the Hampton Inn brickell and the Hilton Hotel website.

An energy management system is featured in each guest room. When no guest is in the room, the A/C adjusts up and lights can be turned off by turning the master-switch off.

All guest shower heads and faucets are low-flow valves to reduce water flow.

The guest room toilets feature dual flush valve.

Large windows in the guest rooms, lobby and other public areas are benefiting from the day light resources, and provide views into the regularly occupied areas of the building.

Building is oriented east/west to minimize direct-sun penetration

Lavatory faucets, and toilet flushing in the public restrooms are motion activated.

Housing of a 35,000+ gallon cistern to harvest rain water for irrigation and washing exterior surfaces (pool deck, driveways, etc.).

Washing machines meet efficiency standard of less than 25 gallons per load.

An Ozone Laundry System was installed to reduce the use of chemicals, water and energy. It also helps extend the lifetime of linens and towels.

Implemented a linen and towel reuse program that allows guests to choose whether towels and linens are changed daily.

Xeriscape and native plant landscaping reducing dependence on the irrigation system.

Virtually no incandescent bulbs are in used. Lighting utilization of Energy Star qualified Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL) and more efficient and longer lasting T-8 and T-5 fluorescent lamps and, where appropriate, LED lighting.

Where appropriate, occupancy sensors are installed to control lights in public places and in work areas.

TVs and other appliances are Energy Star rated.

HVAC equipment has the highest level of energy efficiency.

The ozone laundry system in our commercial laundry reduces the electricity and gas required for washing and drying linens and towels.

Where appropriate, use of low-e glazing to introduce daylight with minimal solar test gain.

Preferred garage parking spaces (those close to the elevator) will be designated for hybrid and electric automobiles. Some spaces will have electric outlets so electrical vehicles can recharge during low peak electric consumption hours.

Housekeeping staff are using environmentally safe, non-toxic cleaning agents that decreases the exposure to toxins both for the housekeeping staff and our guests.

All efforts are been made to use wood products that are certified by Smart Wood through the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

Construction waste was recycled.

Biodegradable plates, cups and tableware for use at breakfast.

A recycling program was instituted in the public areas (breakfast, meeting spaces and pool area). Housekeeping staff were educated to retrieve recyclable materials from the rooms rather than dump them in the trash.

Consideration will be given to have employee uniforms made from recycled materials.

When linens, towels and other reusables are no longer satisfactory for guest use, they will be donated to local charities.

Where possible, construction materials as well as furniture, fixtures, carpeting, etc., were composed from recycled materials.

Consideration will be given to installation of a compactor/bailer to reduce waste and to recycle cardboard and paper products.

Most operational and accounting reports are stored electronically rather than printed, saving as much as one ton of paper annually.

The restaurant is located in downtown Orlando Florida and once again Antonio teams up with Andrea Mejia Interiors to produce some of these award winning images.

Orlando Architecture photographer Antonio Cuellar captures the essence of the place by using dramatic composition and a combination between natural lighting and artificial lighting to produce these stunning images.

The place as you may not know takes its name from a colombian Island of BARU that is considered by many, the closest thing to paradise. In contrast is combines with the name Urbano with translates to urban and therefore its inspiration is taken from street art. The place features graffiti art along with elements often found in the street. Elements such as traffic light and traffic signals.

Lately I have noticed that a lot of my clients are asking for dusk shots. Dusk shots are beautiful because it makes the product stand out from the traditional picture. In Many ways I believe the reason for that is that a proper dusk shot can only be taken by a professional architecture photographer. Many people cannot afford this so this is why is differentiates the product. I still believe that, taken at the right time, nothing compares to shooting architecture with natural light. Take for example the two pictures bellow from my two last jobs in miami as an Architectue photographer.

Of course you have to be lucy. you cannot expect to have a beautiful day every day, but your chances really do improve if you are an Architecture photographer in Florida as our weather is beautiful for the most part all year long.

Behind the scenes of an Architecture photographerBehind the scenes smallThis video is designed for clients to get an idea of one of the many ways an architectural photo-shoot can take place. Miami Architecture photographer, Antonio Cuellar and the rest of the crew, consisting of two assistants, a stylist, and in this case, a video person, perform a photo shoot of the new Hampton Inn Hotel in the Miami Downtown Area.

Antonio’s approach to this shoot consists of several Architecture photography Dusk shoots, the one seen in the video is an exterior dusk shoot of the front of the building. Other shots taken at dusk are, the pool and Bar area, not seen in the video. The Architecture photographer uses supplementary lighting in order to make this building stand out and contrast the bigger an taller buildings that appear on the background.

This type of Architecture photo shoot posses its challenges as the communication with the assistants is limited due to the distances at stake. The Architecture photographer must use experienced assistants in this case. Some of the other challenges consist of traffic logistics as the assistants often need to stand in the middle of the road with lighting gear, generators etc.

Antonio will be taking his next Architecture photography assignment to Orlando. Stay tuned for details.
